Characterizing Extreme Emission-line Galaxies. I. A Four-zone Ionization Model for Very High-ionization Emission*

چکیده

Abstract Stellar population models produce radiation fields that ionize oxygen up to O +2 , defining the limit of standard H ii region (<54.9 eV). Yet, some extreme emission-line galaxies, or EELGs, have surprisingly strong emission originating from much higher ionization potentials. We present UV HST/COS and optical LBT/MODS spectra two nearby EELGs very high-ionization lines (e.g., He ?? 1640,4686 C iv 1548,1550, [Fe v ] ? 4227, [Ar 4711,4740). define a four-zone model is augmented by zone, as characterized (>54.4 The has little no effect on measured total nebular abundances, but does change interpretation other EELG properties: we measure steeper central gradients; volume-averaged parameters; T e n log U values. Traditional three-zone estimates parameter can underestimate average 0.5 dex. Additionally, find model-independent dichotomy in abundance patterns, where ? /H abundances are consistent N/H, C/H, Fe/H relatively deficient, suggesting these /Fe-enriched more than three times. However, there still high-energy ionizing photon production problem (HEIP 3 ). Even for such /Fe enrichment high s, photoionization cannot reproduce observed EELGs.

High-Ionization Emission in Metal-Deficient Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies

Primordial stars are expected to be very massive and hot, producing copious amounts of hard ionizing radiation. The best place to study hard ionizing radiation in the local universe is in very metal-deficient Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxies. We have carried out a MMT spectroscopic search for [Ne v] λ3426 (ionization potential of 7.1 Ryd), [Fe v] λ4227 (ionization potential of 4 Ryd) and He ii...

High-ionization Fe K Emission from Luminous Infrared Galaxies

The Chandra component of the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) presently contains 44 luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies with log (LIR/L⊙) = 11.73−12.57. Omitting 15 obvious AGNs, the other galaxies are, on average, underluminous in the 2-10keV band by 0.7 dex at a given far-infrared luminosity, compared to nearby star-forming galaxies with lower star formation rates. The...

H I observations of emission - line galaxies

We present single-dish Lovell telescope H i observations of a sample of 67 emission-line and UV-excess galaxies, of which 52 are taken from the University of Michigan (UM) catalogue. In addition, H i observations of 24 gas-rich irregular galaxies are presented. We find that emission-line galaxies are H i–rich with a median H i mass to blue luminosity ratio MHI /LB of ∼ 0.45 M /L . Within the UM...

The ionization of the emission-line gas in young radio galaxies

This paper is the second in a series in which we present intermediate-resolution, widewavelength coverage spectra for a complete sample of 14 compact radio sources, taken with the aim of investigating the impact of the nuclear activity on the circumnuclear interstellar medium (ISM) in the early stages of radio source evolution. In the first paper (Holt, Tadhunter & Morganti), we presented the k...

The Ionization of the Emission Line Gas in Nearby Powerful Radio Galaxies

In this article I review the dominant physical mechanisms in the extended emission line regions (EELR) of powerful radio galaxies at low redshifts and, in particular, the balance between jet-induced shocks and AGN photoionization. I consider the evidence for jet-induced shocks based on morphological, kinematical and ionization (diagnostic diagram) information. Although each of these three types...
